August 24, 2008 : Inside the Secret Invasion Box Set

DSTMatt here with an updated look at our new Secret Invasion Minimates! Look inside for our updated pictures, INCLUDING the first shots of our heroes in their “human” modes. If you haven’t read Secret Invasion #5, beware my super-mild Spoilers…

First off, let me address the question of “why.” Why did we include these particular characters? Why not the Super Duper Skrulls? To answer that, think waaay back to before this whole event unfolded. At that time, we had an inkling of what Marvel had in store for us and were even treated to a little behind-the-scenes info - but we still didn’t know how this whole Secret Invasion thing was going to play out. When we saw the advance preview art featuring heroes in their 70’s costume it was perfect. Not only were some of these costumes still missing from the Minimates line, but there were even some new characters we could finally get around to making! Here’s how we decided.

Right away we can drop Spider-Man, Power Man, Thor, Invisible Woman, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Captain America, Iron Man and Vision since we have already made Minimates of these costumes. Throw out Emma Frost too since her costume change is minimal. That left us with 2 new characters and 5 new costumes to pick from. Narrowing it down more was difficult, but we eliminated Ms Marvel and Wonder Man (can’t say why) and wound up having to decide between Mockingbird and Jewel. You can see who won, but we had no idea Mockingbird would wind up having so much panel time!

Our next step was to figure out the whole Skrull angle. We planned on the extra Skrull heads from the beginning, but the heroes’ Skrull faces were debated right until the last minute. We ended up putting the Skrull faces on the back of their normal heads - making it easy to switch from one version to the other with just a quick twist. The photos you see here show the final Skrull faces.

A couple of newly-sculpted pieces later and we had ourselves a box set. Like our past releases, each set has at least one Minimate that we won’t ever reuse anywhere else. In this case, I think Jessica Jones fans should buy these up by the truckload since I doubt they’ll have another chance to add her to their collections.

I love this set because of a few things.

1) Phoenix was sorely needed in this outfit ever since we did the Dark Phoenix exclusive.

2) If you buy two sets you wind up with 4 70’s heroes, 4 Skrulls impersonating 70’s heroes and 8 additional Skrull heads (four from each set) to create your own Skrull armies.

3) New hair for Phoenix and Jewel looks great.

4) Unlike the previous Beast, this one can double as an Avengers member!

5) Wolverine’s new claws, mask, boots and shoulder pads are a biiiiig improvement over the bulky Giant-Sized X-Men berserker released a couple years ago.

6) It’s Jewel!

So there you have it folks. You can pre-order the set on our site or by visiting your local comic book store. Look for it in stores this November!
