September 19, 2008 : Ask DST Q&A #7
This week it’s all about Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica! Chuck answers your questions about character selection (we get it, you like Carson!!!), likeness rights and approvals as well as the status of classic Battlestar Galactica figures!
Burton Packer
Your products are excellent! In the BSG gallery(ships) I see a battle-damaged viper mk. vii (bronze colored); will that be available to order? If so, I would order 4 of them. keep up the excellent work!
DSTChuck: Glad you like the BSG stuff, its been fun to work on. You have good eyes, too! That ship was done to show buyers a potential exclusive that we could do, however we still do not have a buyer for that yet.
Karl Sherrel
For August 28, you have updated the shipping list in the blog but did not include the BSG Boomer & D’Anna Action Figure 2-pk. Is the shipping date still 10/15/08 as indicated in the DST store? Please don’t say its canceled.
DSTChuck: It’s not canceled but it had to be put on hold until the studio can clear the status of the D’Anna character.

The “Sharon/Athena/Boomer/Eight” head-sculpt on the “flight suit” Sharon shown at SDCC seemed to be far more accurate (in terms of likeness to the actress Grace Park) than the head-sculpt shown on the “Boomer” action figure in the “Boomer and D’Anna Biers” two-pack. IF the “Boomer” action figure is still planned to be released, is there any chance the new head-sculpt as shown on the “flight suit” action figure could be used on the civilian “Boomer” action figure. It was great to hear that Admiral Adama and President Roslin are finally getting action figures in series 4. Will there be any two-packs accompanying the release of series 4 action figures (in a similar manner to which the “Apollo and Dualla” and “Boomer and D’Anna” two-packs were originally intended to accompany series 2)? I’m looking forward to trying to collect as many characters from BSG as possible and the two-packs seem to be a great way to go about doing so (especially if a “new” character is packed with a Cylon variant - for example Baltar with a D’Anna variant). Thanks for taking the time to consider my questions. Cheers.
DSTChuck: Sometimes (or most times) at shows we are showing prototypes or works in progress, so you’re going to see lots of variation as we move along. Boomer has been a bit of a struggle for us but I think we’re getting there. As of NOW there are no two-packs planned for series 4 but we’re not done with BSG just yet so you’ll be getting more of the cast I am sure.

So I saw the Roslin figure prototype, and it looks amazing aside from one thing. I noticed it had the same legs as caprica six. And as we all know, Roslin is much shorter than six, and when she wears her pant suit, they’re a lot more wide legged near the foot. Is that just the prototype, or do you plan on keeping them that way? Also, we’re dying here, the series 2 still hasn’t been released, I need my fix!! Lol
DSTChuck: We do the best we can to keep an accurate scale for all the figures we do and we are aware 6 is a very tall character. We’re just working to find the right balance. Series 2 is out there so if your local store does not have it they can order it from Diamond Comics or you can find the figures online.

What are the odds of seeing Apophis in wave 5? I think fans would be OK with (re)using the Serpent Guard/ Teal’c body and it should kept down costs. Better a bulky Apophis rather than no Apophis. A quick review online, shows about half of the Serpent guards sold already are painted gold why not join them? On another note, who owns the rights to Stargate ships? Several years ago Hasbro mentioned Stargate ships in their titanium line but never produced any. The ships would be great with figures. Build a Ha’tak or Prometheus!
DSTChuck: With the Stargate line more than any other line, we’ve really tried to mix in aliens and “bad guys” so Apophis is pretty high on our list. We’ll just have to see how that plays out. I assume if Hasbro had rights it would have just been to die-cast ships, I have no idea what other rights they may have had or what rights other folks may have.

Stargate Atlantis toy line comment here… I would just like to be counted among those who really, SERIOUSLY want to buy a Beckett figure. Please, I am on my knees begging you to make a Beckett figure!!!
DSTChuck: Yes, I have heard of this Beckett guy and we’ll have to consider him.
Leesa Perrie
Please can we have more Stargate: Atlantis figures? Especially Carson Beckett and Radek Zelenka, though Major Lorne and Chuck the technician as well would be great! In fact, the more the better. Even though the show has been cancelled, fandom is and will still be going strong for some years, as the fandom for Stargate: SG1 is still going strongly, so please don’t abandon the franchise. Thank you.
DSTChuck: As of now we have no plans to stop making Stargate figures of either franchise.

For the sake of Matching, will we ever get to see a bare-armed and tattooed Starbuck figure to match with the Sam Anders? Or is it possible we might see a Viper Pilot Anders? It’d be great to see the couple match. Will Laura Roslin and Bill Adama be featured with or without glasses? If they are, will the glasses be removable much like Daniel Jackson in the first wave of Stargate? I really love the increase in interesting accessories that come with the Stargate lines and I noticed in the past that whenever a wave gets delayed, usually we get more accessories than originally shown at Toy Fares and Comic Cons. Was Wave 3 of Atlantis delayed because of some new accessories we may be receiving? Any Anti-Replicator Guns (that were prominent in Season 4) by chance? In a past toy show, I saw a photo of potential garrison uniforms Carter and Teal’c that had a tag marked “pending approval.” Will we eventually see these? Why was the field Ops Weir changed to a black ops paint job? I was really looking forward to the one with original paint job. Any chance of this being an exclusive release in the future? Will the Season 10 2-pack Teal’c figure include accessories that didn’t come with the Black Ops Teal’c or no accessories at all? Also: Is his hair painted or is it a simple re-release. Sadly, none of the existing pictures of the figure show the white patch the character has in Unending.
DSTChuck: Umm ok WOW that’s a bunch of questions! Let me see if I can cover them all..
We have no plans to “match” all the characters we do, but yes there are some more cool versions we can do for Starbuck and Anders.
We’re not sure about the glasses yet but if we do them we’d lean towards removable.
There is no relationship between delays and accessories. The main reason you end up seeing more as we go along is we don’t like to bring lots of accessories to shows, they end up getting lost and are hard to display well.
The BDU outfits were shown when we first started with the license to gauge interest in exclusives. We sold some exclusives but decided to pull back on that idea for SG and keep it tighter. We’ve releases SOME of those outfits as time has gone on and if we can we’ll get as much of the original team out as we can.
Honestly I don’t remember the reason for the Weir change, sorry.
The Season 10 two pack will come with the much requested transport rings.
And last… yes, Teal’c’s hair will have the white streak in it.
Kevin Gomolchak
After Stargate: Universe premieres, will there be figures made for the show like the other series?
DSTChuck: We’re interested for sure! We’ll have to see what the show looks like and how the fans respond before we commit to figures.
John Barrie
Stargate Figures: hey all. Well first, DST, you did an Awesome job at the Stargate Figures, please keep on that great line… Now the question(s): With the release of the Stargate Action Figures we were able to collect cool BAA such as the Gate itself, the Transporter Rings as well as the Ancient Control Chair. Will we Fans see another BAA: Maybe the “Ancient Repository”, with a Wall unit, as display, as appeared in “Lost City”, i guess many fans want to have this, that they can display this awesome and favourite scene from the show. Another question: Earlier in the beginning of the Figures of Series 1, there was a Daniel Jackson Figure in Woodland Camo announced, so will there be another Wave of SG1 coming in the Woodland Camo, because the Desert Series has sold so very well.
DSTChuck: Glad you like the Gate line and the accessories. We’re going to continue each series with some sort of BAA for sure. We did the original team in all woodland outfits as part of series 4. I think that’s going to be it but you never know.
Roddy DeHart
With the announced cancellation of Stargate Atlantis, what impact, if any, will this have on the figure line? How have the SGA figures been selling? Better or worse than you expected?
DSTChuck: Both lines of Gate are doing pretty well. SG1 has always done a little better then Atlantis. I can’t say it WON’T affect the toy line — it has to– there will be less new content to do figures from so it has to change our plans, BUT we’re not going to just stop doing figures, as long as the sales are there, we’ll keep going with both shows.
James White
First just let me say thanks for all the great action figures that you guys have given us over the years. Great job. Now my question. The Battlestar Galactica 7″ figures are some of the best in my collection. What s the likelyhood that you guys will do any classic BSG figures in the 7″ style? I for one would love to see them done. Thank you for your time.
DSTChuck: Right now we don’t have plans for Classic BSG figures but you never know!
Kurt Borden
Great job with the new blog! How about a series of System Lord 2 packs? Apophis and Teal’c (redo Teal’c’s head to include skull cap) Baal and O’Neil Yu and Replicator Carter You have the best of both worlds, primary characters with little retooling but also secondary character that will make die hards go crazy! Sign me up for a couple of cases
DSTChuck: Hey man, glad you guys like the Blog! It’s been cool to work on and it’s something different for the fans so we hope you guys are having as much fun with it as we are. Cool idea about the two-packs! We’ll have to see what we can do about something like that.
Darren Douglas
love your work on the star trek TOS line, want more motion picture figs, but I digress. Do you have the license for classic battlestar galactica figures? the others out there are awful and I know you could do a better job. (Also want Buck Rogers figs but thats a long shot!) cheers, Darren
DSTChuck: Darren, As I mentioned earlier we have no plans right not for classic, but we’re big fans of the show so you never know.

1. I was wondering what involvement (if any) the creators/writers of BSG have in selecting the characters of which to make action figures? Specifically, I was wondering how much information DST was given in respect of the reveal of the “Final Four” Cylons and whether DST has been told the identity of the “Final Cylon” in order to ensure the character is captured in plastic (based on the presumption they’re going to be a pretty important part of the BSG universe)?
2. While the female Cylons (of the Significant Seven) have been fairly well represented (with numerous Sixes, two Eights (including the unconfirmed Eight in Flight Suit) and the single (hopefully not cancelled) Three), are there any plans to include some of the male “Significant Seven” Cylons? While I understand DST still has several important/essential characters remaining (Tigh and Baltar topping the list), it would be good to see a little more representation from the “Significant Seven” (especially as “army building” with multiple versions of these characters is warranted).
3. The increase in accessories with series 2 was very welcome and I particularly liked how real effort appeared to have been put into selecting appropriate and relevant accessories. While I can’t think of any obvious “build a figure/accessory” for the series, I would love to see some “model” BSG ships included with the action figures. Is there any possibility of the figures coming with an accessory like this in the future (for example, Adama coming with a model Battlestar Galactica, Roslin coming with a model Colonial One, Flight Suit Eight/Sharon/Boomer/Athena coming with a Raptor, etc)?
4. In your “Spotlight on BSG Series 2″ one of the figures shown was a Samuel T Anders in Flight Suit figure. Is this an “official” variant figure that is planned to be released in the future, or was it simply your author having fun with a head-swap (the released Anders “head” on Helo’s flight suit body)? Many thanks. Cheers.
DSTChuck: Wow another long multi-part’er! OK, let’s see…
1. The cast and creators do NOT tell us what figures we can and can’t do, so if you don’t like a choice all the blame lies here. Many them do get to approve the figures and many of them like the figures and have some for themselves though. I can not say ANYTHING about the final Cylon at all or I think Ron Moore will have me shot, so any clues you want on that and how they relate to the figures can be find in his interviews only.
2. You’re right that we’ve got a good bit of cast to go and part of that could be trying to get all the skin jobs made. We’d love to do both but we’ll just have to see how sales go.
3. There are no plans for BAA to come to the BSG line, sorry.
4. So far no plans for an Anders in flight suit but as you’ve seen its something we are considering. The one in the picture you saw was created by DSTMatt and was exactly what you suggested (Anders head on Helo body).

Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis - For SG-1: Is there any chance of Adria being made? She’s very much a part of SG-1 Seasons 9 and 10 and Ark of Truth. The costume from the two-part episode “The Quest” could be made by tweaking the “Avalon” Vala body. And of course you’d have her Firefly/Serenity fans wanting her too. For Atlantis: I know you’ve gotten a bit of flack for having Dr. Jennifer Keller in Series 3 of Atlantis, instead of Dr. Carson Beckett. I just wanted to let you know there are a lot of us happy with that decision. And her popularity is also high due to Firefly/Serenity. I also like that you are including Sheppard in his Garrison attire. Could we see Teyla and McKay released in similar gear?
DSTChuck: Right now I can say we have no definite plans to make Andria but it’s one we’ve considered as a villain. Glad you like Keller! With action figure choices its pretty much impossible to make everyone happy with your choices.
Christopher Gren
Are there any plans to produce an action figure based around a warrior of the Ori. Not Tomin, just a random generic Ori Warrior similar to what was done with the Jaffa figure way back in the first wave?
DSTChuck: I think for now we’re done with the Ori but you never know.
Roderick DeHart
Is there any consideration for a Stargate Atlantis two pack? Perhaps a ‘Grace Under Pressure’ two pack with Rodney and Sam. It would only need repaints - Field Ops Rodney with blue triangles and Atlantis Series 3 Sam with a pink repaint for the jacket. Both characters are very popular and I believe they would sell well. Also, as Mr. Woolsey is the leader now, will we see a figure of him? Maybe in SGA Series 4? If so, will he come with the accessory seen in this shot? http://filebox.vt.edu/users/rdehart/Rodney/woolsey.jpg Any possibility of doing a repaint of the DHD in Atlantis Colors as the next ‘Build an Accessory’ ?
DSTChuck: We’ve tossed around some ideas for Atlantis two packs so I would not be surprised if you see one or two at some point. We’re looking at Woolsey as well.
Jonathan Quirk
Any chance of a Baal figure in an upcoming Stargate SG-1 wave? Villianous, sarcastic, funny, a snappy dresser, AND very good looking… he would seem to be a natural choice for a figure.
DSTChuck: He’s on the list.
Dale Gregory
Hi DST/AA, I’ve got to say, I’m impressed with your Battlestar Galactica Modern Cylons from Series Two. Very nice work! I noticed though that you have already sold out on your web-site and I was hoping to get a few multiples. (I have two and would like to have at least three more.) Is there any chance you’ll be putting more of these up for order in your on-line store any time soon? Keep up the good work. (PS: Please add me to the requests for a Full Voyager Crew!)
DSTChuck: We’re sold out of singles but we still have sets and I am sure comic stores and online retailers have some Cylons. Glad you like it and wait until you see the Razor Cylon!
Adam Hall
Dear Sir/Madam, 1. The accessories included with the BSG action figures for series 2 were a great improvement over the (limited) accessories included with the BSG action figures in series 1. Is there any possibility that DST would consider “alternate heads” as accessories in future series (where appropriate)? For example, some of the figures in series 4 could include the following “alternate heads” - Admiral Cain (an alternate head with a hair style that matches the “Razor” movie), Admiral Adama (an alternate head with moustache) and President Roslin (an alternate head with head-scarf). Thanks. Cheers.
DSTChuck: Right now there are no plans to do alternate heads in BSG or any of our other AF lines, sorry.
Callum Templeton
Dear Dst, Could you tell us what accessories the season 10 2- pack comes with? thanks.
DSTChuck: I think the good news is that it will come with two more transport rings, which might be our most requested accessory ever.
