September 26, 2008 : Ask DST Q&A #8
Ok folks, not too many Marvel or Star Wars questions (except from our new best friend Andrew!), so I decided to clean out the Miscellaneous folder. But for next month, come on you Marvel Select fans and Star Wars fans! This is YOUR Q&A so don’t let all those Star Trek nuts have all the fun.

Why are the bodies and the clothes for the Han Solo and Indy “premiums” so unattractive, ill-fitting and clearly cheap? Do something worthwhile with the license, instead of taking money from collectors.
DSTChuck: Well Andrew I must commend you on figuring out our master plan. It was indeed our intention to just take money from the collectors (we were in fact training an army of chimpanzees to dress as Clone Troopers and descend on Comic Con next year to pick collectors’ pockets. Now I have no idea what to do with all those chimps! SO on to plan B, I guess).
The plan with the Ultimate Quarter Scale Star Wars dolls is not to compete with another high-end figure or even with the established 12″ figure market. Folks that collect resin or collect 12″ figures do so because that’s what they like. This line is neither and does not want to be.
What we’re trying to do with this line is something new and different that we hope collectors will like.
1. They are figures that feature over 23 points of articulation so they can be posed in as many cool ways as fans can imagine and come with some of the most accurate accessories (many from scans of the actual props) we can create.
2. The outfits in many cases are reproduced from archival reference (from the Lucas vaults) by a full-time seamstress with over 20 years experience.
3. The heads (when scans are not possible) are being done by some of he most experienced sculptors in toys.
4. We have gone over all the films and selected sound effects and phrases we think best showcase each character. As an added feature, whenever possible characters that had interaction in the films will have that same vocal interaction with the toys.
5. The MSRP is $79.99 for each.
If those points do not appeal to you, luckily there are lots of other Lucas licensed products out there for you to enjoy. If this seems like something you might want to try out but you’re not sure, then may I suggest you wait until you have held and seen one of these in person before you make your final decision.

Will there be exclusives available via contest/other means for collectors who are connected through groups like facebook? We love your stuff and exclusives always excite collectors!
DSTChuck: Right now we’re not planning on setting any programs up. Our plan is to use the AA site as best we can to keep in touch with folks that have an interest in what we do. As for freebies, yes DST has been known on occasion to send out a batch of freebies when the whim strikes us.

My current Transformers bust count is 36 counting not yet released busts. Is that correct? How long does it take a bust from concept to finish product? I am hoping for you continue this line I currently have all your Transformers in this series. I would like to see Sunstreaker, Sideswipe and most of all Trailbreaker. Thanks for your time
DSTChuck: Wow Jeff, nice collection! I guess you like what we’re doing! We have no real plans to stop but I do think with the rising cost of production we are going to have to slow down our release schedule. It looks like to maintain the size and detail we’re currently doing we’re going to be looking at a $70.00 MSRP in the near future, so six a year seems like a good plan.

How much would it cost to make a figure or a doll of someone and if you could and would make one of me and how much would it cost and if u can’t how would I go about getting it done. Thank you
DSTChuck: Chris, while that sounds really cool it’s not something DST does. Sorry! I ‘m not sure who could do something like that but I think I remember something like that being in the FAO catalogue a few years back.
