December 12, 2008 : Ask DST Q&A #18

This week in the Q&A, DST Chuck answers your questions about Minimates!
Beginning with Ask DST #19, the Q&A Feature will be posted on Mondays. Q&A #19 will go up 12/21.Questions start after the break!
Doug Wolford: Thank you so much for announcing waves 25 and 26, I can’t wait! I was wondering if you would consider re-releasing the Iron Fist & Power Man 2-pack?
DSTChuck: We made a promise to Wizard YEARS ago when they helped launch the line and bought the exclusive that we’d never re-release that item. BUT we could do a different Power Man & Iron Fist or something slightly different
Jose Zuazua: How about a Banshee minimate? I was thinking in a Jim Lee’s X-Men style box set (yellow/blue costumes) with Banshee, Forge, Psylocke, Jubillee (and my least fave mutant EVER) Gambit. For many people, the early 90’s was: INCREDIBLE alternative music, Super Nintendo and that X-Men team, drawn by Jim Lee. Now, I won’t beg…but please please please please please please please.
DSTChuck: I’ve got to be honest with you I don’t think Banshee has ever come up in an internal planning meeting.
Brian Petersen: 1) Back in the day, there was legend of a back-alley Minimates play set. Whatever happened to this? Will play sets ever pop up again? 2) Will the Skrull pack Wolverine have the older style minimate claws or the new ones? 3) Would X-23 be a possible candidate for a Minimate considering her popular connection to the ever-so-popular Wolverine? 4) If I go to a show, I’ll let you know. Just make sure those cases are well secured. LOL
DSTChuck: We did design a couple Minimates resin displays and offered them to retailers at cost but the results were less then impressive and the project had to be canceled. 2) Honestly I’d have to look at the difference between the old and new and check on that. 3) Yes. 4)I’m usually the one standing next to the cases so ….
Matthew Killen: Hey you guys! You have great stuff goin on here! I was just curious about possible upcoming minimates. Is there plans for more marvel zombie minimates? Like the zombie fantastic 4, or Zombie Thor, or Zombie Venom?? Would there also be minimates like Baron Blood, Baron Zemo, or the savage land Mutates?? Thanks for your time. you guys rock!
DSTChuck: You will not see anymore Zombie Minimates, we’ve been asked by Marvel licensing to not create any more. The others are not on any current plans.
Christopher Franey: So on the minimatemultiverse forum I saw pics of the Movie Stealth Ironman minimate and Gauntlet Tony. Any others that we should be keeping a eye out for? I know I will be patrolling my local TRU now for this gem. Thanks for the toys and updates
DSTChuck: Minimates should be an ongoing program in TRU from here forward, with regular figures as well as re-packs and exclusives. For now the only exclusives are the re-packed Hulk Movie and the Iron Man you called out.
Tyler Gilbert: Okay, so I’ve been wondering a lot about two things related to Minimates. 1.) Are you ever going to make Star Wars Minimates? Are you planning to? and 2.) Will you ever create video game Minimates? Example: Mario, Cloud, Link, Zelda, Samus, etc. I’d love either, and I’m sure a lot of others will, too.
DSTChuck: 1. We have asked but for now the answer from Lucas is “no thanks” 2. We’ve done Street Fighter and those were lots of fun to work on, but we had mixed results. We’d do video game MM again if the right project came along.
Carson Wright: Hello, I know the Rocky minimates must not of sold well, or you would probably be doing a set for every movie. I just think you should not have canceled the Rocky III minimates. I would have bought them, in fact, I did pre-order them. Then got an email that said it was canceled. In my opinion, Mr. T and Hulk Hogan minimates would sell great. I think you should finish what you start.
DSTChuck: I 100% agree with you. In fact we tried twice. We showed it at the shows and response from buyers was luke warm at best. Based on the sales of 1 & 2 we decided to NOT go forward with 3. Then we had some emails as well as internal folks saying the same thing you just asked , SO we tried and put them in Previews but orders came back well below what would even be a break even project for us….around here we like to say never say never….but….
