December 30, 2008 : Ask DST Q&A #19

We’re back with another installment of Ask DST with questions submitted by YOU! This week we take a look at questions from Star Wars, Marvel and Transformers fans plus a hint at what DST products are likely to appear in Toys R Us!
Robert Yates:
Hi, I’ve recently heard about the UQS Obi-Wan Kenobi Lightsaber controversy and would like to say that I am a bit disappointed that the prop for the OT version will not be screen accurate. I think this is something that should be corrected as it will make the line feel a bit less high quality and I don’t think that the goal of achieving some sort of continuity across the line, in this case to make the prop seem as if it came from ROTS, is really all that important. I think most Star Wars fans collecting at this level and price range do not want to see revisionist or retcon actions taken with their collectibles. We all know there is a difference so let it stay more authentic to the films please! Thanks! Robert
DSTChuck: Sorry Robert, I understand you concerns and it’s a very valid point. We’ve had some discussions with Lucas and the idea was to make the figures as accurate as possible to what the vision of the films intended. Other issues in the films have been modified for continuity as well so this is seen in that light. We’ve had some thought on this just like you have so maybe we’ll find a way to get the other light sabers out at some point.
Scott Woodward:
Hello, So far I have been pretty impressed with what has been shown of the Star Wars UQS series. Most impressed with Maul, ROTS Obi-Wan and Mace Windu (incredible likeness - good job). There are a couple of items I have questions about. For Hoth Han it seems like Han’s coat is too short. And when compared to the pics on the box this seems to confirm it. Will the production figure have a longer coat? For ANH Obi-Wan. Why the ROTS saber? I understand the continuity issue but it is not the saber that Obi-Wan used in ANH. While I do not consider myself a stickler for details as some collectors, I do see this as a clear problem and will likely shape whether I seek this figure out. Is there any chance that this could be corrected?
DSTChuck: We have not noticed any issues with the coat and it has been approved by Lucas so I don’t see any changes being made (and I think this is the first we’ve heard of this) but we’ll go back and take a quick look. I am very sorry you’re upset and I hope you still enjoy the line but there is nothing to correct - this was a conscious decision that seems to be spurring some discussion. I think folks could go either way on this….to be honest I’m not sure there is a right answer since “film accurate” at times has changed as the films have been altered.
Blaine Rodenbaugh:
Ok…PLEASE tell me good news here. I just saw the new Wolverine prototype, and I’m SO excited….and I’m guessing from the “hint” that there will be a whole series from the new movie out (hopefully) So my question is this…is there any possibility that you guys will make the movie figures that never got done…maybe an x3 Storm?, x3 shadow cat? movie Pyro??? PLEEEAASE!!
DSTChuck: As of now we are only planning one Marvel Select figure from the Wolverine movie. We do have some ideas for other characters from that film but we’ll have to wait and see. We do have a full spread for Minimates planned.
Christopher Franey:
Hey guys how’s it going? I saw the new Jean Grey Marvel Girl figure and I’m very excited for a “bronze” age era X-men with that Wolverine also. Are you guys going to be making any more X-men? Any names you can drop? Also was wondering if you have thought of doing artist-specific figures. With DC they are doing George Perez…maybe some Marvel Select George Perez Avengers? Thanks again for making my Marvel.
DSTChuck: Right now I think we’re going to be doing some more “large” figures from Marvel Select but X-Men are never far from our planning. Personally I’d love to do a cool Magneto. I think with the limited nature of the number of MS releases in a year we’ll stay away from an artist styled line. We did some series of statues like that in the past and it WAS lots of fun.
Fran Murguia: I really like the star wars figures you have is there any way you guys would make vader’s secret apprentice figure from the smash hit video game Star Wars The Force Unleashed?? or any other characters from the Star Wars Video Games Like Darth Revan for example & do you guys do customs by any chance??
DSTChuck: Right now and for at least the next year or year and a half we’re going to stick to characters from the six movies. Glad you like what we’re doing and we’re very excited about expanding the line as time passes to include some characters from the animation as well as from the expanded universe.
James White:
Hey Guys and Gals, I just saw the news that DST is teaming up with Toys R Us and think that this is great news. Does this mean that all of your licenses will be available in stores (not just online). Such as Star Trek, BSG, Stargate ETC??? Will past releases be available or just upcoming releases? Thanks for you time.
DSTChuck: We’re excited as well and we think the increased exposure for our products will help all lines expand and grow to provide more depth and reach. TRU will NOT be carrying all DST lines or licenses, some just don’t seem to fit there for now. They will have a mix of new stuff as well as older stuff being brought back for new collectors.
Morris Barfield:
Hello, I was wondering, what happened to your Speed Racer line?
DSTChuck: Art Asylum discontinued that line before we purchased much of the company - I think to make room for the new movie stuff.
David Alvarez:
I was wondering if you had a release date for Transformers Bluestreak, Prowl & Smokescreen Set Bust?? Thanks for the info!
DSTChuck: They should be out early in 2009 and we’ve very sorry for the delay!
