February 9, 2009 : Ask DST #24

This week in the Q&A, DST Chuck tackles all your Star Trek related questions. It all starts after the break!
Andrew LaRue: Based on some of the latest Trek Q&As we know that DST won’t be putting much focus on DS9 and Voyager, and this has fans worried about getting the last of the crews- let alone some of the cast that aren’t actual crew. Most notably is Garak and Neelix. Many fans believe that these would require too complex sculpts to be possible, however, it seems as though the Odo body would only need slight modifications to use for either of these figures. I was wondering if any consideration has been put into these characters, and potential use of that body?
DSTChuck: Andrew since we have not even started work on Voyager it’s way too early for me to comment on if we’re going to get to Neelix..BUT I have to say the chances of seeming him or Garak would be slim.
Peter Kavanagh: I stumbled unwittingingly across the Star Trek exclusives at TRU. Could you tell me the production run #’s for the the Khaaan Kirk and the TMP 2 -pack? I just love the Khaan Kirk…KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN
DSTChuck: I am sorry Peter while I am glad you found the item and like it, DST does not give out the production runs of its figures.
Francois Michel Torrente: hello, I would like to know if you intend to produce a figurine of the characters of “hoshi sato” ,”Dr phlox” from “star trek enterprise” in the serie ” broken bow “, or the characters of “quark”, “rom” and “nog” from “star trek deep space nine” and all the crew from “star trek voyager” in regular or special edition ? thanks bye, best wishes for 2009
DSTChuck: I am sorry but I think its pretty unlikely that we would produce figures of any of the characters you have listed there.
Jim Raptis: Hello, Will the Enterprise D come with extra parts to convert to the “All Good Things” Future Enterprise? In the gallery pics you provided a while back shows some conversion parts being added to the prototype. Many distributors are claiming that this version will be available. I haven’t seen anything about this in the blogs!! Thanks,
DSTChuck: No the Enterprise D and the AGT are separate items. We are VERY close to locking up the buyer for the AGT version so you should be able to order very soon.
Scott Pollock: I had asked this question a while back hoping that it would have gotten answered yesterday but it did not. So I am trying again: The feet/boots of the TOS Kirk I had bought were assembled on the opposite legs. I would like to correct them but don’t want to break the toy. Will they (boot/feet) pop out like the hands of those figures? Would it help if I were to heat them with a blow dryer first?- Or do they not come out at all and I am stuck? Please answer. Thanks, Scott
DSTChuck: If you have to swap them yes a hair dryer or a short bust in the microwave might help BUT your best bet is to just contact DST customer service for a replacement.
William Overton: In the past you guys have released a lot of TOS role-playing stuff (several phasers, tricorders…). But I was wondering if you are planning on releasing any TNG role playing stuff, specifically the Type 2 phaser from the show. If you can’t comment, I understand. But I want all of you to know how much I enjoy your products. They are simply great.
DSTChuck: Right now there is no TNG role-play on the sked for 09 but you never know.
Jonathan Durbin: Hi, Do you have any future plans for a DS9 Space Station or USS Defiant? Also any idea if you will produce any Borg ships? and last but not least maybe a USS Excelsior?
DSTChuck: I don’t see the station happening. MAYBE the Defiant, we’ve considered the Borg and Excelsior.
James Sawyer: What happened to the Kruge and Maltz pack? I hear it’s canceled! Please say it ain’t so…..if it is, any chance of releasing it as an exclusive somewhere? Oh, and what’s up with the Timeless Geordi orders? I still haven’t gotten mine regardless of the fact that I sent it out the first week the dvd set was available.
DSTChuck: Kruge and Maltz have been placed on hold due to low orders. All the Timeless Geordi have been sent out so please contact customer service so they can try and track down your order.
Enrique a Santos: can you consider a release of 7″ figures of Klingon women (LURSA, BETOR, PRIXIS)?
DSTChuck: We have considered the sisters before but right now nothing is on the schedule.
Badar Shahid: Hi. I love your series of Star Trek figures. they are the best out there. I like my TNG figures most of all. Do you think you will ever make a Guinan and Tasha Yar figure to complete the collection? I know they just released Nurse Ogawa, and she wasn’t even in that many episodes as Guinan was. keep up the good work guys. you rock.
DSTChuck: We’d really love to get both Guinan and Yar out somehow. We consider them all the time. I do hope we find a way to make them work and we do understand the fans interest in these characters.
Derek Marchese: Just a comment, really. If you’re planning another Locutus figure, I would suggest a fully-assimilated version with the Borg implants completely surrounding his right eye and covering his forehead. For my money, the one you previewed is too similar to the last one and would not entice as many people to buy it. (Don’t forget a dab of red paint for where the laser is supposed to be!)
DSTChuck: Thanks for the heads up!
Andrew LaRue: With the long-awaited release of TNG’s wave 5 we now have a black/gray-uniformed Crusher in our hands to nearly finish the movie crew. The problem, however, is that Picard still doesn’t exist in this uniform from DST, only from AA - which unfortunately clashes in sculpting style far too much. Is there any plan to get this figure out there eventually?
DSTChuck: We’re aware of the issue but I’m not sure there would be enough demand for a re-run. At least its Picard so there is a chance.
Eric Q: Hey there! I love your Trek busts “Icons” line, and was wondering if there were any future releases, or if the series has run its’ course?
DSTChuck: We have a couple more that we’d like to do, we’re just waiting to see if there will be enough demand.
Kevin Gomolchak: I’ve seen that there is going to be a re-release of the TOS action figures utilizing the sculpts from Art Asylum. Are they going to use the same rubbery shirts that have been annoying collectors, or are they going to have molded, hard plastic shirts?
DSTChuck: We really did dicuss changing them to solid torso and at one point it looked like that was going to happen but right now I can’t be sure.
Andy Kinnear: I normally ask about Stargate, but here I have one or two for Star Trek! I have been keeping an eye on your news for the Enterprise D, and the AGT Enterprise D. - 1) Are the two different saucer modules swappable? Ie, could you buy and use the Ent D’s saucer on the Secondary hull of the AGT version? How strong are the magnets that hold the ship in one piece? 2) What are the chances of finding a distributor for the AGT version of the ship? Incidentally is the warp drive engaging sound used from the series or the Generations movie? It has the shorter “build up” rumble, implying the movie version?
DSTChuck: Welcome to the ask DST Trek week! I THINK you could swap but I am not 100% sure until the AGT is completed. The magnets are VERY strong and they are not the only way the saucer is connected. We’re very close to finding a buyer for AGT.
Andrew LaRue: The Kirk and Spock TMP 2-packs turned out awesome, especially with the surprise of the Toys R Us exclusive version! I would just like to request that if you guys plan on making Scotty and Decker with that same body, could you do away with the fist hand? Or, at least include an alternate left hand? Thanks.
DSTChuck: Depending on how well this does in comic stores and TRU we’ll consider doing more two packs for end of 2009.
Max Weremchuk: Hello! Any chance of the “Enterprise NX-01″ Phase Pistol and Communicator becoming available again? Max
DSTChuck: Right now we have no plans to go back and make more.
Dave Cordes: I have really enjoyed the Retro Cloth Star Trek Series because of their nostalgic value of reproducing the vintage Mego figures I had as a kid. I was wondering if you have plans to continue the line past the Sulu/Gorn wave or if the line will end here. You have given us figures beyond what Mego originally gave us and there are so many possibilities to deliver even more such as Mirror/Mirror variants of the crew and more original series aliens. Any chance this will happen?
DSTChuck: We’re going to sit down with our partners at EMCE toys at Toy Fair and see what the rest of ‘09 and ‘10 might look like.
David Giordano: Why don’t you make the Star Trek Voyager Ship? The Playmates version is so hard to get for under $200.00. You would sell so many. You need to make it in a large version with moving engine cells and lights. Thanks.
DSTChuck: Right now based on our talks with buyers and our sales folks Voyager is not a priority.
Sam English: Hey DST folks, Sam from Australia here. A huge thanks for getting TNG5 & DS9 wave 2 out to all us eager fans. My question is about the Nurse Alyssa Ogawa action figure. The Troi body used for Ogawa’s protoype seemed the perfect height, as Ogawa is noticeably much shorter than Dr. Crusher on the show. However the final figure seems to have Beverly’s legs, & she is now taller than many of the male Star Trek figures! Was this another factory hiccup, or was the change intentional? Thanks for your time. PS - If you ever make a lab coat Beverly Crusher, you could use the Nemesis hairpiece & call it a ‘Season 4 Crusher”. It would be awesome for that hairpiece to be available to everyone….plus a coated Crusher would make sense & be relatively cheap to produce.
DSTChuck: Glad you have your DS9 and TNG5 SORRY about the delays! We did have some back and forth with Ogawa, the mix of height and chest size made it difficult to find a perfect match.
David Ellis: Hey Chuck!, I recently got in touch with your customer service department at DST to enquire about a replacement stand for the USS Enterprise - E - mine broke fresh out of it’s box - i’ve only recently opened it - and was wondering what you could do for me? 1) with your relationship with CBS being at it is, would it be too much to ask if you pleaded with them on behalf of the entire Star Trek fan-base
to let you have a license for the new movie so that you could produce figures for it as well as playmates. Thanks
2) Is the next ship you’ve got planned a ship from the 24th century or the 23rd? 3) any chance of you following the trend with 3.3/4 scale figures like Mezco have done with Hell Boy? 4) What is the planned line up for your 2009 TOS wave? 5) any chance of seeing a Bajoran Kira and Quark 2 pack this year?
DSTChuck: David, I am sure my guys will help you with your E if at all possible, sorry about the stand. Right now Playmates is working hard on the new movie but never say never, maybe somewhere down the road we will get our shot. Sorry no more hints on the next ship, your just going to have to wait…right now we have no plans to explore the 3 3/4 scale but you never know. SORRY you have to wait for Toy Fair to see what new AF we have planned. Right now we have no DS9 two packs planned for ‘09.
Jonas Dimter: Is there any chance we might get the ST TNG first and second season dustbuster-phaser?
DSTChuck: Right now no plans for TNG role-play in ‘09.
Steven Denton: Hi Chuck. In a previous Q&A you confirmed that Nemesis Crusher’s new hairpiece was tooled and I was wondering if you have given any consideration to using the new hairpiece on a TNG “labcoat Crusher” Variant? Maybe as an exclusive? Many of us were disappointed that we didn’t get the labcoat with season 7 Crusher and since the purple Troi has the solid shoulder joint (without the groove of the uniform sculpted into it) all that would be needed is the torso part of the jacket piece or you could always use a cloth jacket. It’s going to be a real shame if we can’t get a Beverly Crusher with the newly already tooled hair and the labcoat would really rock. Thanks!
DSTChuck: There has been little to no interest from the buyers for more TNG product so I think that’s a great variant, we’ll just have to wait.
Jacob Root: In spite of difficulties, thanks for getting TNG Wave 5 delivered. My question concerns O”Brian’s fisted hand. While it is great in a fight, it is not good for holding his cool accessories. Could you give future fisted figures an extra hand than can hold things?
DSTChuck: Good point , we’ll pay more attention to swappable hands going forward.
Collin Roche: Hello to whoever answers these things, I am an avid Star Trek fan, and I have taken the opportunity to buy two of your ship models, the Sovereign class (Enterprise E) and Constitution Refit (Khan movie). I’m also about to win a bid on Ebay for your NX-01 model (too bad you had to stop making it…they’re so pricey now to get one). Anyways, I was hoping to try and mod the lighting on these things, but there is a small issue, I’m not an electronics expert. I am an aerospace engineer by training, not electrical. I think I have the necessary skills and help, but what would really help me accomplish this without overloading the circuit would be some circuit diagrams of the ships. I just want to make sure I’m not putting any LEDs that would adversely affect the LEDs I plan to leave in the ship. I understand that it is possible some of the information you have on these models could be proprietary, but I’d appreciate any help you could give to me. Thank you, Collin Roche
DSTChuck: While we very much enjoy that fans do things like that and its fun to see them, its not something we really want to encourage. I know lots of fan sites have posted much of the information you might be looking for…
