April 20, 2009 : AskDST Q&A #34
We’re answering your questions again, this week focusing on the Stargate and Battlestar Galactica licenses! Plus see what DSTChuck has to say about the future of the BSG action figure line, which Cylons might be coming your way next, Stargate puppets from 200 and the odds of seeing new Caprica product.
Roddy DeHart
The new Stargate Universe Preview shows a pretty cool Stargate with new style chevrons…so do you have the SGU license and is there another new build-a-gate in the works??
DSTChuck: We are still in discussion with MGM on the direction they want to take and we have also requested all the refrence we can get, so I can say right now we’re hopeful.
Blaine Rodenbaugh:
I love the new gallery of cylons, and I’m happy to see more for the line. After watching the AMAZING finale last night, I was wondering if you guys would be making the centurions with the red markings to indicate they were on the humans side? Also, I’m not sure if I’ve asked this before.. but will the Roslin figure come with removable hair? for her wig and scarf…or will there be any exclusives?
DSTChuck: It has been asked before and no the Roslin will NOT have removable hair. All of us at DST emailed each other during the finale at the same time saying “We have to do the red stripe” So I would think at some point they would happen.
Tyler Kelson:
Would the following suggestion be possible for future waves or are they already in the works somehow? Atlantis Series 4 · Todd (stunner, stun sticks used on Daedalus) – Mail Away · Commander Acastus Kolya (Genii pistol, sub machine gun, shotgun) · Atlantis Commander Richard Woolsey (optional suit, laptop) · Dr. Carson Beckett (scanner, life signs detector, pistol) · Field Ops Major Lorne (P90, pistol, life signs detector) · Satedan Ronon Dex (Satedan Weaponry & Armor) – Px Comes with pieces to Pegasus DHD SG-1 Series 6 · Sodan Warrior (sodan staff weapon, cloaking device) – Mail Away · Adria (anti prior device, saangral) · Ori Warrior (ori staff weapon, stun gauntlet) · Kull Warrior (P90 w/ kull diruptor, TER w/ kull disruptor) · Offworld Daniel Jackson (ARK of Truth & Naquadah Generator (earth version)) · Ceremonial Jaffa Robes Bra’tac (Staff Weapon, ZAT, Training staff)– Px · 2 pack – Martouf/Lantash & Jacob Carter/Selmak (zats open & closed, zatarc detector, symbiote poison) · 2 pack – General Hank Landry & Colonel Reynolds (G36K, for Reynolds, Landry with same stuff as Hammond) Comes with pieces to the Sarcophagus
DSTChuck: Right now nothing is set in stone for the next SG1 or Atlantis waves so thanks for the ideas!
Callum Templeton:
Is there any chance of the Stargate puppets from 200?, And would the Atlantis Gate room possible? thanks.
DSTChuck: We did talk a little about the puppets when it came on but I think they are something we’re not going to make figures based on. No plans to make any of the Gate rooms.
Andy Kinnear:
Hi Chuck, In the most recent Q&A for Stargate and Galactica, (today!) you said “I have to be honest at this point we have covered a good bit of the Stargate universe so we do not have the next series planned yet. If sales are still strong we’ll plan the next wave.” Does this apply to SG1, Atlantis, or both? I ask as there are still some popular and notable characters from both series waiting in the wings. - General Landry, Dr Frasier, Apophis, Master Bra’tac and Adria from SG1, Dr Zelenka, Lieutenant Ford, Mr Woolsey and Dr Beckett from Atlantis. In the case of Dr Beckett, I have been waiting and hoping for him since the Atlantis figs were originally announced. - Does this mean their chances are waning?
DSTChuck: For SURE, there are more cool characters especially Beckett. I do think we did a fair job of planning how best to cover the core characters of the show with the waves we had planned. With both shows off the air right now, there is some hesitancy from the buyers to take in more product so we’ve just go to see how they do with what they have on order and how much longer fans support the show merchandise.
Will Bueche:
I expect that when you make Baltar, you may be tempted to reuse President Lee Adama’s suit jacket, but I am writing to express my hope that you will try to make Baltar’s unusual “collar-less” suit (with the red shirt underneath) that he wore in the premiere movie, and which Head Baltar wore from then on. It’s just a new torso to make that distinctive collar. Please? Thanks. I’m hoping you’ll make a few different Baltars, including a disheveled version.
DSTChuck: Baltar is for sure a character we think we need to address for the line to be truly complete but we’ll just have to see what happens.
Agent 86:
Dear DST,
1. In your last Q&A (23 March 2009), you mentioned that there were more BSG action figures to be released in 2009/2010 than shown/announced at that point in time. Was this mention a reference to the three (3) additional Cylon Centurions strongly hinted at in your “Cylon Identification Guide” (Mortor Pack, Resurrection Hub and “Earth” Cylon Centurions) or is there a chance of more humanoid characters/figures in 2009/2010?
2. The Gina action figure from series 3 appeares to have a different head/facial-sculpt to the Head Six and Caprica Six action figures previously released. While I realise that “Gina” has an individual hair-style, why was the facial sculpt changed when all Number Sixes are meant to look identical?
3. When can we expect to hear further news and/or confirmations of further BSG action figure releases for 2009/2010 (other than those already announced - series 4 and the Starbuck/Leoben two-pack)?
4. Any chance of some hints as to the accessories with the series 4 BSG action figures?
5. Do the glasses that come with the Admiral Adama and President Roslin action figures in BSG series 4 plug into “holes” in the heads of the figures or do they simply “sit” on their heads? Thank you.
DSTChuck:
1. There are more BSG characters coming other then the Cylons in the guide.
2. We do in fact have multiple head sculpts for the “skin jobs” , while they are all the “same” they have different personalities and expressions.
3. We hope to have more BSG to show at SDCC but we’re not 100% sure yet.
4. Accessories coming soon…
5. The Adama glasses will plug into his head.
Jeremy Budnack:
Is there a plan to make a toy replica of the Battlestar Galactica (instead of a statue), similar to the toy ships made for Star Trek?
DSTChuck: That’s something we have considered but right now no plans to make any of the ships in toy format.
Josh McGreggor:
Hello, Is it true that the final 3 set of BSG Minimtaes (wave 5+6+ New Caprica) sets have indeed been canceled? None of the retailers still selling the preOrders seem to know anything. BBTC says they are on their way…But everything I can find on the issue onlne and in posts and blogs points to the sad fact that there will be no more. Do you have any information for all of us waiting to know?
DSTChuck: MM wves 5,6 & Caprica are on hold and all retailers that ordered it from us have been notified. We’ve not given up hope of them ever coming out, but if they do they will not be in that exact format.
Kushmeer Farakhan:
We already know that if sales of series 4 are good, we’ll see more BSG figures. Can you give us a hint at who would be in the 5th assortment? Many want a final five box set. If you do it, may I make a suggestion. You could have a standard Tory and Ellen. Col. Tigh could be included with his eyepatch(and without one as an singlepacked figure), Tyrol could be in his orange suit(as opposed to the green fatigues we already have) and best of all, instead of a standard Anders(that we already have), we could have the Hybrid one seen in the final episodes of the series. Also, there’s been tons of talk of D’anna(which I know we can’t have) so how about making Doral, Simon, and CAvill? Maybe in a 3 pack?
DSTChuck: All of the humanoid Cylons as well as Baltar would get a long look in the planning of the fifth wave.
Octavio Haro:
I was wondering how or why the Horus Guard from series 5 of the Stargate line shown at Toy Fair ended up with the jackal helmet rather than the more common falcon helmet? I’m exited to see the jackal helmet as I never expected it, but I would still like to see that falcon helmet. Any chance we will see it as well?
DSTChuck: We worked up both helmets but were unsure if we would be allowed to make anything other then Horus version. Both are now approved so we’ll have to see how we get them out.
Jeff Weber:
Will Art Asylum/diamond select toys be producing any ships/fighters from the Battlestar and or Stargate lines USS Odyssey/daedalus and the F-302 fighter from stargate or the Galatica and the vipers from battlestar will you guys be making them?
DSTChuck: Right now we do not have plans for toy versions of any ships outside of Star Trek but its something we continue to look at.
Blaine Rodenbaugh:
First off, with all the complaining that can go on with these blogs, may I just say that I really do appreciate and love the fact that you guys do this for us! I have 3 questions…
1- Did the problem with the actor get worked out to have all of series 4 bsg released on time?
2- I hate to say it, but I’m a complete sucker for all the cylon centurions, and I LOVED seeing the new versions, but where can I find them? I’ve looked everywhere and Toys’R'Us’ website doesn’t even have them up! When do they come out? and
3rd- Like I said, I’m a sucker for cylons, can you give us anymore hint to the figures “not seen in 2,000 years”??? PLEASE! And let us know if there are anymore plans for new cylons…maybe one with a red stripe like in the finale (pro-humans) and possibly a retro warrior with that BIG sweet gun from the finale and A BLADE OUT OF IT’S ARM???
DSTChuck:
1) YES everything is now 100% approved for BSG4 but they will not be able to come out when planned, it looks like they will be late summer now.
2) We did do a Cylon for TRU and we shipped it into stores around Christmas and I know they still have some BSG figures in stock but sorry I do not know which stores.
3) Yes we have more Cylons planned and we do hope to get the red stripe one out at some point soon.
Kurt Borden:
Can you give us the whole story behind the jackal headed guard shown (certainly not a Horus!!) at Toy Fair? Will there be a SDCC stargate figure this year?
DSTChuck: There will not be any StarGate exclusives at SDCC this year, sorry.
Blaine Rodenbaugh:
Does DST plan on creating a line for the new Caprica show? And if so, will they be able to co-exsist with the BSG figures? (not be a different size or style)
DSTChuck: Right now from what we have seen of Caprica we do not have plans to make figures from that line, but its something we plan to watch very closely.
Rustin Parr:
The new Horus Guard figure you unveiled at Toy Fair is INCREDIBLE!!! It has caused me to finally break down and start collecting the SG-1 line, however I’m having alot of trouble with series 1 - specifically Jackson and especially O’Neill are incredibly difficult to find. That is, as usual, pretty frustrating but what is especially aggravating is that they come with pieces I need to complete the Stargate. Is it at all possible to re-release those two figures either as is or with new cards, or even just make the stargate pieces available through the website? I know that part of it is the “you snooze, you loose” type of thing, but these are THE core characters and THE core/titular setpiece - not being able to get them or complete the gate makes jumping into the line at series 5 difficult and less appealing…
DSTChuck: Re-releasing figures is a tricky thing, collectors want there to be come value in what they have purchased and on the other side we know it can be hard to bring new fans into the fold. That was part of the thinking with wave 4, that way new fans can get all the characters from SG1. We have given some thought to finding a way to get the gate back out in circulation but so far nothing we have though up has really been viable.
Joshua Hesselgrave:
Hi again. I had follow up to a question I had about the Red Dress Six I have with different shoes than the normal version. I received the figure loose from another collector and do not know where they got it from. Sorry that doesn’t narrow it down much, but were there some released with the non-solid red foot like in the pictures released for solicitations? Also, will you folks be attending Wizard World Chicago this year and, if so, will you have some of the exclusives with you that are planned for SDCC? As always, thanks.
DSTChuck: I suppose it is possible but I was not aware of a running change being made. Yes we will be at WWC but as of now no plans for a BSG Exc. But we do plan to bring any other SDCC exclusives that might still be in stock — so that COULD mean some stealth Cylons.
Christopher Gren:
Yoddle I’m just going jump right into questions:
1) Is there absolutely any chance of a Boomer/Athena figure being released? I’m not sure if its not been released because it was part of the Eight/Three two pack. they could be released as an Eight Two-Pack.
2). Is there any word on actions of the other Cylons? I mean, we have two of the Final Five and Number Six and we’re getting a Number Two in an upcoming two pack, but are we getting a Number One and the others?
3) Is Gaius Baltar getting a figure?
4) how about some more background characters like Doctor Cottle, Seelix. Love the BSG and the Stargate waves! Keep them coming!
DSTChuck: 1) YES its very possible in fact as I have said its highly probable.
2&3) We very much like to see enough support for the line to finish the Cylons and Baltar.
4) Lets tackle 2&3 first. I must say we’re SO lucky here to be working on StarWars, Trek, BSG and Stargate its almost scary. I promise as long as you are liking what we’re doing and the stuff is selling we’ll keep doing it.
Shaun Baer:
Okay…with all I’ve read about the Star Trek line, I’m getting worried about my investment in the BSG line. I haven’t been able to pre-order wave four yet but I am going to…so go ahead and add me to that list. I don’t know about anyone else, but there are just a few folks that I feel this collection would simply be incomplete without. So, without further ado: How likely is it that we’ll see any of the following characters? 1. Gaius Baltar 2. Sharon (any version…Boomer or Athena) 3. Saul Tigh Will there be a similar product push for “The Plan” as there was for “Razor?” I know there are many cylon-happy folks who would like to see more human model cylons…(with the unfortunate exception of D’Anna who I assume we will never see). Thanks for keeping us in the loop. I know we don’t always get the answers we’d like…but I appreciate the forum nonetheless.
DSTChuck: The rise or fall of Trek has nothing to do with BSG and its success, other then the overriding concerns about the economy and how that affects what folks want to spend on toys. We agree with all three of the ones you listed and they dominate the tops of our list as well so keep your eyes on the blog! We’re pushing for refrence, script etc. for “The Plan ” so we can see if it makes sense for a wave of product like Razor did. Yea I think D’Anna might be boxed but we never say never! Thanks for reading!
Christopher Gren:
1). When we will be seeing a picture of the Horus Guard figure? 2). Does the figure of an Anubis Guard figure mean that DST has acquried the license for the Stargate movie?
DSTChuck: 1) We have one now, I’ll poke go bug marketing to put it up on the Blog.
2) No, it just means we have no problem pushing to see how far we can go…
Roderick DeHart:
Will we ever see another incarnation of Dr. Rodney McKay? Please?? So far, it seems like he is a great seller.
DSTChuck: I can’t say for sure but if we did another wave of Atlantis I think there are other characters we’d want to be sure we touched on .
Gerardo Nevarez:
Is there a check list for Battlestar Galactica Figures and the Stargate Figures.
DSTChuck: They should all be listed on our main site www.diamondselecttoys.com with the exception of promo figures. I know there are some great Minimate sites on the web that have very complete checklist you can use.
Blaine Rodenbaugh:
Can you give us any insight as to what’s going on with the BsG series 4? Now it’s pushed until August? Everything seemed to be going so well with the updates. Do you think maybe sales for the line were down because of the wait? Please please please give us our BsG…It’s going to be the best series yet! but we don’t wanna wait forever!
DSTChuck: The reason for the delay was we hit a snag with one of the actor approvals very late in the process, so late in fact that I think we could have gone forward without making the change, but that’s just not something we like to do. Sometimes in fact a delay helps a little with orders (as long as its not too long a delay) because it gives our sales guys time to build up more orders and make more follow up calls to buyers.
Michael Todd
Hey guys.. listen.. i love your work on the BSGg line, but what the heck is the holdup? I can understand problems with the d’anna/boomer 2pack.. but seriously.. boomer on her own or as an exclusive, would sell great! Any idea if you are gonna do that anytime soon? Also, i’ve been eagerly awaiting the case i have preordered of the adama’s, roslin, and cain.. but now i see it has been pushed back yet AGAIN to freakin AUGUST?! AFTER COMIC-CON?! wtf happen there?! Can you at least give us a good explanation for that one? That’s a HUGE push for some figures that you have said were pretty much in the bag for a long time now. in fact, we even saw some huskers painted up you showed us a while ago. If you want to sell these well, you have to hit while the iron is hot. And if you wait too much longer, i’m worried you will lose some of the collectors. I hope not, because i am DYING to get a frakking baltar to go with my six’s, and a tigh, and heck, even a gaeta. not to mention a good version of chief in his orange suit with cally (i smell a 2pack!) .. PLEASE?! give us some info on this! You are killing me with the anticipation! I’m totally not mad at you guys, because i understand things happen.. but i just don’t want to see this line die off and never get an at least partially complete set of figures. We need the main characters at least, you know? Any news you can throw us is always appreciated! Thanks. Keep up the good work, but hopefully, less delays! ~Mike
DSTChuck: Boomer if for sure a case of a character with bad luck. Everytime we think we have her ready to come out it falls apart, but we’ve taken steps to correct that now. I explained as best I could what happened to BSG 4 a few questions ago. As for the figures being in the “bag” that was simply not the case, there was still work to be done on some of them, after Toy Fair. Sometimes I think it would be great to go into exact detail about some of the things that happen to delay releases, but its just not in our nature to make excuses or blame others — we’re the ones you support so we’re the ones that ultimately have to take the blame. We’re doing the best we can I promise and its our hope to do much better in 2009 and 2010.
