July 26, 2010 : Ask DST #98

Hit up the answers to this week’s Star Trek Ask DST after the break!

Wulfgar Von Kriegsmann

I am a crazy Star Trek fan. I am also a collector and player of Star Trek Action figures. Lets start with something simple: A Klingon warrior ( you can never have enough Klingons) A Cardassian Trooper, a Gem Hadar Soldier (I would love to own an army of those) and a Romulan Centurion. So my question is: Who had the brain fart to make 7 of 9 and not make the rest of the Voyager crew members? Is 7 of 9 supposed to save the Delta Quadrant all by her self? And what is the deal of making so many Captain Kirks and Picards in different uniforms. Don’t you think we need some Villains? Such as Gul Dukat? What about a 2 pack of Lursa and B’Tor? Do you know how many fans would die for those 2 figures? You should also consider making a four pack commemorating the DS( episode “Blood Oath” with Jadzia Dax in Klingon battle attire and Kang , Koloth, and Kor. What fan wouldn’t kill to have those legendary figures? Another disbelief is that you have not made Captain Kurn Worfs brother. He played a pivotal role in TNG “Sins of the Father” and “Redemption” He was even on DS9. You must make him in a Klingon outfit because he was a great Captain. I know you are in the business to make money, and you do want to make money right? Then make these figures.

DSTChuck: The villains we have made have not sold anywhere near as well as Kirk and of the TNG crew Picard is head and shoulders over the others in the crew. The thinking was IF 7of 9 could sell then maybe others from Voyager would have a chance BUT alas 7 of 9 was not able to sell the numbers we needed. We do the best we can but we know we can’t make everyone happy.

I can’t wait to see the release the Enterprise-B from star trek generations can you tell me what is the box going to look like and there any chance to see a rerelease the enterprise to celebrated the 45th anniversary of star trek next year

DSTChuck: We have not even started on the box but it will have to follow the style guide provided by the studio that you see on all our Trek products.

Andy Kinnear

Hi Chuck et all, The newly announced Wave 5 for classic Trek - will they be available in the UK and the rest of Europe, or are they an exclusive / limited to the United States?

DSTChuck: We are hoping it will be for sale in the EU but we’re still waiting to see what the distributor gets for orders.

Randall Cheuvront

I love the Star Trek ships but I have to ask why no Voyager or Defiant releases?

DSTChuck: Randall, the ships take a great deal of time and we hope at the most to do two a year so we just have not gotten that far yet.

Russ Schroeder

I see on the Art Asylum Blog pictures of Kirk, Scotty, and a Romulan. These look great ! However, they are being identified as Wave 5. I thought Wave 5 was Chapel, Rand, Salt Vampire, McCoy short-sleeved. What’s the deal ?!?!?!??!?

DSTChuck: That wave 5 has been placed on hold and since no matter what this former TRU wave will come out first it becomes wave 5.

David Stoeckel

Are you ever going to do anymore of the ALL GOOD THINGS Triple-Nacelled Enterprise-D? I’ve been searching everywhere for one.

DSTChuck: Hopefully the retailers that bought the exclusive purchase more from us. If they do not then after one year we can go back and make more, so I am pretty confident there will be more coming at some point.

Scott Pollock

Will the Star Trek Wave 5 figures be available at Toys R Us?

DSTChuck: No it will not be,they have chosen to take a break from carrying Trek figures.

Chris Coombs

1) How well did Series 5 (Scotty, Kirk & Romulan) do? 2) If Series 5 does well, will we see more figures in the near future? Will we ever see Rand, Chapel, Salt Vampire & Romulan Commander?

DSTChuck: Chris , the sales on the series 5 started pretty slow but we’re ok with where they are now. We’re trying a couple things, like the limited nature of those cases along with an idea we had on the two packs. If either of those work there is much hope for the “missing” figures in 2011.

J.B.

While I’m sure you can’t get into detailed specifics, can you provide some indication that you are working toward releasing Trek figures (preferably TNG related) for 2011?

DSTChuck: Right now no work is being done on NEW figures. We’re just starting planning for spring of 2011 right now.

J.B.

For SDCC 2011 why not release some of the Borg wave figures? Foget the electronics for the alcove, go back to a 4 figure (ea with alcove piece) concept (Queen, Drone, Voyager 7 of 9, Drone 7 of 9). Perhaps have FC Locutus as a poly-bag exclusive. I’m sure you spend a lot of $$ on designing these figures so here’s a good opportunity to release most of them.

DSTChuck: We’ve done some Trek stuff at SD in the past with mixed results. It is something that can work from time to time but its not a good idea to have that as your overall release plan for a line. We find it best to use the shows to augment or start promotion.

J.B.

Previously we asked for direct online sales for Trek figures (ie a figure-a-month, similar to Mattycollector.com) for which part of your response was that DST was not set up type of operation, staffing, etc. Fine. But is there no way to partner with an online retailer (such as with Rick from NewForce) who is able to accommodate these type distribution? While I realize these would have a higher price point, If it meant getting the characters we’ve been asking for I would happily pay it. Running several months of figures would meet your minimum quantity production requirements and avoid the endless delays that you are infamously known for. Since you love pre-orders, offer yearly subscriptions that promises that certain highly demanded characters will be included and finally see the light of day. I find hard to believe that a property such as Star Trek, even if it’s a niche market can’t find a viable outlet.

DSTChuck: There are no online retailers interested in taking on a Trek figure at this time. IF they were you are right we’d be happy to set something up with them. We still struggle to find homes for the exclusive ships and roll play items.

In addition to the next Star Trek film, 2012 also marks the 25th Anniversary of the launch of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I know you guys did a great job with the 25th Anniversary of The Wrath of Khan…would you ever consider giving a TNG 25th Anniversary a try? Maybe with figures, ship(s) and tek? Would you ever bring an idea to CBS/Paramount (whomever is responsible) and say…”Hey guys…this anniversary is coming up! I bet we could put our heads together and really make this a success?” Or is this an idea you would wait for them to come to you with? I’m curious how the whole process works…and selfishly it seems like an opportunity to get a Tasha Yar out of the deal (if not more season one folks, like Judge Q or a Bun Troi…I have loots of ideas). Love to hear yours!

DSTChuck: I think if CBS does have any promotion planned for TNG then we would consider some product to go along with it.

Anthony Maloney

I would like to know if you are planning on building bridges, engineering and other rooms that were seen in the shows.

DSTChuck: We do not have any plans for something like that.

So I was watching Star Trek last night, and a light bulb went off in my head! lol. I absolutely LOVE your ships and think they’re-for the most part- perfect…and can I just say I am SO excited for the Enterprise B…. My question/light bulb is this… Have you ever considered doing a dry dock for the ships?!?! I think it would be an amazing addition to the collection, and maybe you could use the same tech as with the D, and have some magnets in there so the ships can stick or something?!

DSTChuck: I can honestly say we have never thought of something like that. Maybe we will.

Derrick Hall

I think we have all come to a point where it’s time for someone to post some proof that you’re truly in the process of working on the next ship(s). I’m so confused I don’t even know what ship you are working right now, if any. I’m not concerned with what your estimated shipping date is NOR am I going to ask. At least with the Enterprise D (which you claim was a PR / production timeline disaster) you posted proof throughout the production: The sound board test, the factory attempts w/ your responses to the factory. With whatever you are working on right now, you’ve offered no proof. So instead of asking when you think the estimated shipping date is, I’m going to ask: When are you going to post a picture of anything concerning the pre-production of the ship(s)? I mean anything, a red wire, a led, a piece of plastic or clay, or show us the base from the Enterprise D and say it’s for the “B” or Excelsior……anything?

DSTChuck: I’ll see what I can get the product manager to post. Glad to hear you liked that type of thing. I honestly don’t think we’re at an “interesting” point in production but let’s see what we can do.

James White

Hey Chuck, Since we are getting a TOS Romulan and a Romulan Kirk are there any chances we will see the Romulan Commander that you guys showed any time in the future? It was a great likeness to Mark Lenard and would look great on my shelf. Thanks

DSTChuck: It is POSSIBLE if the series 5 and 2 packs do well enough.

Shaun Baer

The more I’ve been thinking about this, the more it’s just been bugging me so I have to ask…regarding the Romulan that’s on it’s way with the gold helmet…why didn’t you release the Mark Lenard Romulan Commander instead? Based on what was shown at ToyFair that was one of your more perfect sculpts. I was so excited to see that character on my shelf. It seems like to tool this new head would have been the same cost to tool his head, so why did you guys go through the process of sculpting a second Romulan head who is less recognizable? Don’t worry, I’ve ordered mine and I’m excited to have any new aliens…so this is not meant at all as a criticism…I’m just trying to understand where that sculpt went and why you made the change.

DSTChuck: The Romulan figure was further down the production path then the commander so there was less risk involved in taking the risk to see if it would sell.

Stephen Butchart

Have you got any plans to bring out any new star ships I am sure I saw a model of the USS Enterprise B on a website at a toy fair as I love and care you put in to the vessels they look stunning.

DSTChuck: Enterprise and Klmingon Bird of Prey are the next two ships in the line.
