One of the biggest comic events of 2011 — one whose effects are still rippling through the Marvel Universe — was “Fear Itself.” The massive Marvel Comics crossover, which saw eight mystical hammers fall into the hands of the world’s worst villains (and some of its greatest heroes, as well), gave us some amazing battles… as well as some sweet new costumes! To commemorate the Earth-shattering storyline, Diamond Select Toys is releasing two box sets of Marvel Minimates: The Worthy and The Mighty!

The Worthy box set includes Cul, The Serpent (the Asgardian god of fear); his herald Skadi (a.k.a Sin, the Red Skull’s daughter); Mokk, Breaker of Faith (formerly the Grey Gargoyle); and Angrir, Breaker of Souls (formerly the ever-lovin’ blue-eyed Thing). The Mighty box set includes Asgardian All-Father (and Cul’s brother) Odin, as well as Spider-Man, Hawkeye and Iron Man in their final battle costumes, with their dwarf-forged uru-metal weapons. Diamond Select Toys has released over 60 figures in their Marvel Select line, all in a consistent 7-inch scale, and the year 2012 marks the line’s tenth anniversary. To celebrate, DST has several great figures planned, including figures based on the movies Avengers and Amazing Spider-Man, but the first figure to hit stores during our anniversary year is Colossus! The X-Men mainstay who transforms into solid steel checks in at a towering 8.25 inches tall, and his 16 points of articulation give him a wide range of movement. To see how he stands up against another Marvel Select figure, we sent him and Gambit to the Danger Room, to get in some practice sparring. We even tested him against the giant spiked panel that he comes with! Check out the photographs in our gallery, and look for Colossus to hit stores in mid-February, followed by the Green Goblin. Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Minimates Wave 1 is in stores now, with exclusive figures at both Toys “R” Us and comic shops/specialty stores, and Wave 2 should be arriving next month. But it’s almost time to pre-order Wave 3! As seen on Marvel.com, our next wave of MvC3 figures will hit in the Spring, and the line-up for the wave is packed with all-stars. As usual, some of the two-packs are exclusive to the specialty market, some are at Toys “R” Us, and some are shared between the two.

Everyone already knows that Minimates make great stocking stuffers, but what if you have a lot of Minimates, and want a fun new way to show them off to your friends and relations? Well, we’ve got an idea — why not trim the tree with them? Due to the interchangeability of Minimates, it’s actually pretty easy. Here’s how you do it:

1. Remove the Minimate’s head.
2. Clip the loop end of an ornament hook onto the exposed neck peg. (In a pinch, you can also unfold a paper clip into an S shape, and wrap the smaller end around the peg.)
3. Place the head back on, as well as the Minimate’s hat or helmet.
4. Bend the hook/clip upwards, so the hook can be seen over the Minimate’s head.
5. Place on tree.
6. Repeat.

At about $7 for a pack of two, that’s cheaper than most ornaments, and you can show your love of Marvel Comics and movies, Capcom games, Halo, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Universal Monsters, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, pirates, fireman, policemen, SCUBA diving and much more! When you think about it, there are probably very few superheroes that use bottle openers. Cap and Spidey have super-strong thumbs, Wolverine has his claws, Iron Man definitely has that function built into his suit (he may even have a corkscrew), and Hawkeye probably has a trick arrow that does the job. And Thor? He just breaks the top of the bottle off on a table and drinks from the jagged remnant. But what’s the average mortal to do? The standard bottle opener is the only route available, although Diamond Select Toys has come up with a way to look more heroic while doing it. Starting in early 2012, DST will release a series of Marvel Comics-based bottle openers to comic shops and specialty stores (available through Diamond’s Previews catalog), beginning with the Mighty Thor’s hammer! Look for Mjolnir to drop just after the New Year, but be warned: Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be thirsty, shall possess the power of Thor! (Not really, although you will possess the power of levers. Are they science, magic… or one and the same?)
