January 30, 2012 : Marvel Minimates Wave 13 To Span the Marvel Universe at Toys “R” Us

tru_13
Diamond Select Toys’ partnership with Toys “R” Us has given Marvel fans 12 waves of great Marvel Minimates, each containing exclusive characters from across the broad diaspora of the Marvel Universe. Well, this spring will bring us the lucky 13th wave, and with Avengers movie merchandise otherwise dominating the pegs, this wave will showcase the worlds of Spider-Man, Daredevil and the X-Men!

Spider-Sense Spider-Man & The Punisher
DST revisits gun-toting vigilante The Punisher for the first time since Punisher: War Zone, and goes back to his first appearance, when he took on Spider-Man! Spidey gets a removable spider-sense effect, to let him know the Punisher has him in his sights.

Daredevil & Kingpin
Crime lord The Kingpin was one of the earliest Minimates DST made in the Marvel line, so he’s long overdue for an update! This version incorporates the new big-body design used on characters like the Hulk, and comes with his old sparring partner Daredevil.

Mirage & Magma
These two New Mutants used to be trainees at the Xavier School, and they recently got the old team back together, taking an apartment in downtown San Francisco, near the mutant haven on the island nation of Utopia.

Boomer & Rictor
Cable took the training of new mutants in a different direction than Professor X, and the mutant strikeforce X-Force was known for their risky tactics, as well as their risky fashions. Our first figures of Boomer and Rictor show them in their amazing ’90s costumes.

Look for this wave to show up at Toys “R” Us and on toysrus.com in March!

header2
At the end of the summer, the world will be treated to a new Spider-Man movie, The Amazing Spider-Man, featuring a new villain, a new costume, a new Peter Parker and a new take on the wall-crawler’s origin. Diamond Select Toys has been hard at work on their toys and other merchandise for the film, and with their Marvel Select figures of Spider-Man and the Lizard now available for pre-order, we thought we’d talk to some of the people who worked on them to see what went into creating these highly detailed, 7-inch-scale toys.

November 4, 2011 : Anti-Venom Returns to the Marvel Select Line in 2012!

anti-venom
In the 9 years that their Marvel Select toy line has been in existence, one of the most sought-after figures Diamond Select Toys has released has been Eddie Brock as Anti-Venom. With the Spider-Man frenemy recently playing a major part in the “Spider-Island” storyline, as well as taking a spot on Wonder Man’s Revengers, and secondary market prices for the sold-out figure soaring into the stratosphere, the tenth anniversary of the Marvel Select line seemed like a great time to bring back the fan-favorite character (originally released in 2009) for another production run. Sculpted by Jean St. Jean, Anti-Venom stands 7 inches tall, with 16 points of articulation and a detailed symbiote base. Pre-order him today through your local comic shop or the DST site, and look for him in spring 2012 at comic shops, specialty stores and online retailers!

November 1, 2011 : The Jean DeWolff Saga: Behind the Scenes of an Epic Spider-Man Tale… and its Toys!

series43a
When Diamond Select Toys and Art Asylum were looking for an epic Spider-Man storyline to base their next wave of Marvel Minimates on, one story stood out — a story that showcases the darker side of Spidey, and one that, until now, has not been immortalized in toy form. That story is “The Death of Jean DeWolff.” Originally appearing in Spectacular Spider-Man #107-110, it was first published in late 1985, a time when comic books were exploring the gritty side of superheroes. It begins with the discovery of the body of NYPD detective Jean DeWolff, a crime that sends Spider-Man (and guest star Daredevil) down a dark road to catch the killer. The story was among the first published comics work of a Marvel sales department employee named Peter David, who would go on to legendary runs with a number of Marvel characters, including Hulk, She-Hulk and Captain Marvel, and who also co-created Spider-Man 2099. DST sat down with Mr. David to talk about the story’s origins, the fan reaction, and the imminent existence of a tiny, 2-inch Sin-Eater Minimate.

October 24, 2011 : Marvel Minimates to Revisit Classic Spider-Man Tale, The Jean DeWolff Saga

series43a

The mid-1980s was a dark time for superheroes, with comic books exploring the obsessive side of heroism and a more sadistic side of villainy. But it was that era that gave us what are now considered the classics of the comics world. One such classic? The Death of Jean DeWolff, written by Peter David. Jean was a detective in the NYPD and an admirer and comrade-in-arms of Spider-Man, and her brutal murder in 1985’s Spectacular Spider-Man #107 sent Spidey down a dark path. His investigation of the crime spiraled out of control, and more people would die before the final scene, in which he went toe-to-toe with Daredevil.

To commemorate this landmark storyline, which has been collected numerous times since its initial publication, Diamond Select Toys will release a wave of Marvel Minimates based entirely on the Jean DeWolff saga to comic shops and specialty stores. The line-up of Wave 43 (due out in early 2012) will include:

- Spider-Man (black costume) with Jean DeWolff
- Daredevil with Sin-Eater (both with removable masks)
- J. Jonah Jameson (removable jacket) with SHIELD Agent (extra hair)
- Aunt May (chase figure) with SHIELD Agent (extra hair)

These will be the first toys ever made of Jean DeWolff and the Sin-Eater, who would return in different incarnations in later years. Also, these will be the first Minimates ever made of the standard SHIELD agent and Spider-Man’s Aunt May.
